The slate was a heavily disrupted backyard: patchwork dirt with inconsistent grades, scattered/half-demolished concrete pads, and an outdated built-in barbecue, in short, a major challenge with multiple potential points of failure. Circulation between the back door, pool, and lakeside was unclear, and the competing elevation changes created trip points, water traps, and visual clutter. It was a huge challenge: but HBC Decks love challenges! The brief wasn’t just to “fix” what was there—it was to wipe the slate clean and completely reimagine what the space could become: three distinct destinations (patio, poolside, and dock) that read as one cohesive outdoor environment. Technically, the site demanded full grade correction and drainage management away from the home and pool, selective demolition and replacement of failing concrete, and code-conscious transitions (steps/landings/rail points) that feel natural and safe. A unified material and detailing language had to tie the house, pool edge, and lakeside together while staying comfortable under Arizona sun and durable (and paw-friendly) for daily use. All of this needed to be sequenced in a live backyard—protecting the pool and lakeside edge—while delivering a cohesive, 1,000-square-foot program that felt more like a heavenly escape than a basic backyard.
